Music Room, the Capital Club (京城大厦50层京城俱乐部)By now you probably heard the term “Shanzhai” or “bandit”. Trend, counter-culture, anti-mass market, there are many ways to describe it. In the telecom industry, the estimated 250 million “bandit phones” or shanzhaiji (山寨机) manufactured in 2008 had a deep impact on the results of tier 1 manufacturers and major local brands. This event will feature two leading industry experts to talk about the “Shan Zhai Spirit” and investigate economics, legal, creative and cultural aspects of what has been recognized as a major force in the mobile market.
Karl is a globally trained, wireless industry executive with Mandarin Chinese language and Asian cross-cultural business expertise, and is a leading wireless evangelist and mobile device specialist for the Greater Chinese handset ecosystem. Karl makes his home in Woodinville, Washington State and is currently based in Beijing.
Scully Meng is the Editorial Assitant and Journalist for chinadialogue, an NGO based in London, aiming to provide a platform for communication between China and the world on environmental issues.

Dress code: Club does not permit jeans or athletic clothing on the 50th floor and that mobile phones are not permitted to be used in the clubs dinning rooms.

By now you probably heard the term “Shanzhai” or “bandit”. Trend, counter-culture, anti-mass market, there are many ways to describe it. In the telecom industry, the estimated 250 million “bandit phones” or shanzhaiji (山寨机) manufactured in 2008 had a deep impact on the results of tier 1 manufacturers and major local brands.
This #28 session titled “Shanzhaiji: Creative copycatting, industry threat?” will investigate the economics, legal, creative and cultural aspects of what has been recognized as a major force in the mobile market. The event will take place at OrangeLabs’ Innovation Gardens in Zhongguancun.
